The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's first cycle tunnel, was inaugurated as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path. This 42-kilometer cycle route is located around Jerusalem.

The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was officially inaugurated at a formal ceremony on Thursday , attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze'ev Elkin, Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov and hundreds of cyclists.

Jerusalem was once a very well-known tourist destination due to its rich history. Elkin explained that today along with its historic treasures the tunnel construction project incorporates modern-day tourism. "The inauguration[of] the tunnel is an additional aspect of the development Jerusalem as well as its transformation to an attractive tourist destination for everyone throughout Israel as well as around the world.

Elkin's ministry, which was also in charge of the project together in conjunction with Jerusalem Municipality, said that the ministry "invests hundreds of millions of shekels each year throughout Jerusalem's tourism, and also in the creation of innovative attractions and ventures, which connect the glorious historic past of our eternal capital and its future."  נווה פריצקינווה פריצקי I invite the cycling community to enjoy a safe and modernized route that will take you through Old Jerusalem.



Elkin's ministry and the Tourism Ministry budgeted the project.

Elkin said that the Kerem Tunnel project was a crucial element in achieving the goal of changing the concept for transportation in Jerusalem. "The tunnel, which is connected to the lengthy Jerusalem Ring Path, will connect the existing bike routes in the city as well as those that are paved throughout the city's neighborhoods with the aim of encouraging cycling among its residents and its visitors, and also in promoting the green revolution in transportation in Jerusalem."

The current works include road construction, installation blowers, and sophisticated safety systems to ensure that the tunnel is safe for everyone to use during the entire year.
